“I don’t mean to insult anybody’s town, but Savannah is absolutely the most beautiful town in America,” Mellencamp says. “There’s no question in my mind, I’ve been everywhere, and the most beautiful town in America is Savannah, Georgia.”
Yes, you see Mellencamp DOES love Savannah, GA. He did an interview (linked to below) with a local weekly newspaper that focuses on the arts & entertainment scenes in Savannah, as well as other timely topics & events in the City.
It is our deep hope that John will engage with his beloved Savannah on the issues of homelessness in his most favorite city in America, in fact to him “… Savannah is absolutely the most beautiful town in America“.
We believe he most likely understands how homelessness works in a city like Savannah because of his advocacy recently with the recording of a PSA for World Homelessness Day (10-10-10). Watch it here:
He also showed his interest in homelessness before when he engaged in Toledo & also embraced the 1Matters.org advocacy, along with an interview recently linked to in our other post today with ToledoStreets.org site, Toledo’s “Paper with a Mission”.
He hasn’t commented or engaged on the fact that homelessness exists in Savannah. It is still beautiful to him even with the homelessness that exists here. So probably it wasn’t visible to him or his wife when they cruised around Savannah, either doing their recordings or touring the city taking one of the commercial tours they indicated they had done ( where they learned about the history of the First African Baptist Church with slavery in the South, the reason he decided to use that venue to record one his songs, making a difference in the humanity of this new album).
A message to John: we’re ready to engage with you on the issues around homelessness in Savannah! It would be absolutely GREAT if you could engage with us on our own efforts to put a mark on Savannah as one of those cities who is committed to putting together a significant effort around WHD (10-10-10) & maybe even raise the bar in Savannah with a whole week of activities for our recognition of & participation in World Homelessness ACTION Week over the following week.
